Cardinals Produce 31 Shots in 1-0 Win Over Northern Illinois
October 10, 2019 | Soccer
MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State University soccer team dominated possession and took a season-high 31 shots while holding Northern Illinois to just two, and Nicky Potts finally broke through in the 83rd minute to lift the Cardinals to a 1-0 win Thursday night at Briner Sports Complex.
The victory was BSU's fourth straight and pushed the Cardinals to 10-3-0 on the season with a 4-1-0 mark in Mid-American Conference play. The Huskies dropped to 2-9-1 for the year and 0-5-0 in MAC contests.
"Overall I thought today was our best performance from start to finish," said head coach Josh Rife. "Northern Illinois' keeper played great today and made some fantastic saves. Credit them for making a good game plan and their keeper for being phenomenal. We knew if we could control the ball and dictate tempo we would create a lot of opportunities tonight, and I thought we did that."
Ball State controlled possession nearly the entirety of the match. Sixty nine percent of the Cardinals' possession was on their attacking side of the field. That possession resulted in the aforementioned 31 shots, 14 of which were on goal. NIU's Megan Donnally registered 13 saves on the night while her BSU counterpart, Tristin Stuteville, saved the only shot she faced.
As the clock ticked toward overtime and Ball State continued to apply pressure, its persistence finally paid off when Sam Kambol and Julia Elvbo combined to find Potts in the penalty area for the game-winning goal. The score was her team-leading fifth of the year and gives her a team-high 12 points.
"Nicky has been fantastic for us and has given this team a real lift," Rife said of the junior midfielder. "She's a really smart soccer player. She puts herself in good situations and makes a huge difference for us."
Along with the 31 shots, Ball State produced seven corner kicks on the night and conceded none. Aside from one long-range shot that Stuteville saved easily and one off a set piece, the Cardinal defense allowed the NIU offense very little room to operate as the Huskies spent only five percent of their possession the attacking third.
The Cardinals now embark on a three-game road trip, starting with a trip to Western Michigan Sunday. Kickoff is at 1 p.m. ET with live stats available via the Broncos' athletics website.
