Pereira’s OT Game Winner Pushes Field Hockey Past Longwood
October 25, 2019 | Field Hockey
FARMVILLE, Va. - Junior Rachel Pereira saved the day with her game-winning goal Friday night at Longwood University, pushing the Cardinals past the Lancers 2-1 in overtime.
With the win, Ball State improved to 4-11 overall and 2-3 in Mid-American Conference action while Longwood falls to 7-9 on the year and 2-3 in league play.
Pereira found the net at the 60:48 mark in overtime off of a penalty corner. Pereira got help from senior Michelle Shampton and junior Jenna McKune. The goal was Pereira's third of the year and seventh of her career.
It was a defensive battle between Ball State and Longwood to start the contest. After a scoreless first quarter, senior Haley Jolly would score the first goal of the day off of a penalty corner to give BSU the 1-0 edge over the Lancers. Jolly got help from teammates junior Sierra Jefferson and McKune who were both awarded an assist. The goal by Jolly marked her first of the season.
Early on in the third frame, Longwood's Karly Harwood knotted the contest 1-1. After that, both teams struggled offensively to find the back of the cage, sending the game into overtime.
Defensively, freshman goalkeeper Wietske Overdijkink got the win for BSU and had two saves.
The Ball State field hockey team will wrap up its five-game road swing when it plays at Virginia Commonwealth Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. ET.
After Sunday, the Cardinals will close out their regular season at home in a Mid-American Conference match-up against Appalachian State on Friday, Nov. 1. The game is scheduled for a 3 p.m. ET start and will be broadcasted live on ESPN3.
