Shampton’s Late Goal Not Enough Against VCU
October 27, 2019 | Field Hockey
RICHMOND, Va. - Senior Michelle Shampton scored late in the game for the Cardinals but it wasn't enough, as Ball State (4-12) would fall 2-1 to Virginia Commonwealth (7-8) Sunday afternoon at Carey Street Field.
The Rams got off to a strong offensive start in the opening minutes of today's contest. VCU scored its first goal at the 4:56 in the first frame and then added another one in the second quarter to take a 2-0 edge over the Cardinals at intermission.
Ball State began to fight its way back into the contest in the third frame after Shampton capitalized off of a rebound to put the ball back into the goal. Shampton's goal marked the seniors fourth of the season and 12th of her career.
After that, the fourth period came down to defense, both teams went scoreless but VCU's early scoring in the first half led to the Rams victory.
Despite the loss, junior goalkeeper Grace Chavez led all players defensively with 14 saves. Chavez now has 244 saves for her career as a Cardinal.
The Ball State field hockey team will wrap up its Mid-American Conference regular season action Friday at the Briner Sports Complex against Appalachian State. The game will be broadcasted live at 3 p.m. ET on ESPN+. The Cardinals will also pay tribute prior to the contest to their seniors.
