Elvbo Strikes Again to Down Western Michigan in Double Overtime
October 13, 2019 | Soccer
KALAMAZOO, Mich. – For the second straight Sunday, the Ball State University soccer team found itself in double overtime looking for a game-winning goal. For the second straight Sunday, Julia Elvbo delivered that goal as the Cardinals defeated Western Michigan, 2-1, at WMU Soccer Complex Sunday afternoon.
The win was BSU's fifth straight and improved its record to 11-3-0 for the year with a 5-1 mark in Mid-American Conference play. Western Michigan dropped to 5-7-1 and 3-2-1 in league contests.
"It was another great team effort by the ladies today," said head coach Josh Rife. "There is great belief and resilience with this group to keep at it as long as it takes. We had some of our best mements of play today and it's great to continue to see us push to get better every time out."
The Cardinals found themselves playing from behind when WMU's Grace Labadie scored the match's first goal in the 26th minute. BSU quickly responded though when Claudia Como netted her second goal of the year in the 37th minute. Nicky Potts was credited with an assist on the play to bring her team-leading point total to 13 for the year.
The 1-1 draw lasted for another 68 minutes with both sides fighting for the game-clinching goal in overtime. Peighton Cook fed Elvbo in the box who scored the 105th minute goal to keep Ball State's winning streak alive. Elvbo found herself in the exact same situation just one week earlier when, at Buffalo, she scored the game-winning goal in the 109th minute on a cross into the box.
Ball State finished the match with 14 shots, five of which were on goal. The defense held the Broncos to 10 shots with three on goal. Tristin Stuteville recorded two saves on the day. BSU earned three corner kicks on the afternoon while surrendering two.
Ball State continues its road trip Friday when it travels to take on Toledo. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET with a live stream available via ESPN3.
