Cardinals Shake Off Slow Start to Earn First MAC Win of Season
January 09, 2019 | Women's Basketball
MUNCIE, Ind. – Thelma Dis Agustsdottir and Oshlynn Brown combined for 45 points to lead the Ball State women's basketball team to a 77-70 victory over Bowling Green Wednesday afternoon in Worthen Arena.
The Cardinals (6-8, 1-1 MAC) battled back from a 15-point first half deficit to claim their ninth straight win over Bowling Green (7-6, 0-2).
Dis Agustsdottir, who had only scored in double figures twice in the first 13 games, exploded for a season-high 23 points on 80 percent (8-of-10) shooting from the floor. Brown notched her fifth double-double with 22 points and 10 rebounds. Meanwhile, point guard Abi Haynes chipped in with a team season-high nine assists.
"Really proud of the resiliency from the kids today," Ball State head women's basketball coach Brady Sallee said. "It would have been easy to lose focus after getting down big but I thought there was no panic in our timeouts. We just tried to figure out how to adjust a little bit against their defense and get the shots we needed to."
The Falcons tried to quiet the Field Trip Day crowd early on by knocking down four 3-pointers in the first quarter to build a 22-7 lead. However, Ball State utilized a 12-0 spurt at the end of the first quarter and beginning of the second to cut the deficit to three points, 22-19. Dis Agustsdottir tallied 10 of the 12 Ball State points during that stretch.
Ball State finally took its first lead on another Dis Agustsdottir bucket, this time a 3-pointer from the top of the key, to go in front, 25-24. The Cardinals settled with a slight 34-31 edge at intermission.
Bowling Green leapfrogged Ball State midway through the third quarter, 42-41, on an Andrea Cecil layup, but that would be the Falcons' only lead in the second half. Ball State responded with seven straight points, highlighted by an old-fashioned three-point play from Brown, to get some breathing room at 48-42.
The Falcons made one final charge in the fourth quarter to close the gap to two points at 68-66. Ball State then made some key defensive stops down the stretch including a Brown block and Jasmin Samz charge. The Cardinals hit 7-of-8 free throws in the final minute to seal the win.
Cecil paced Bowling Green with 24 points and five assists. Kadie Hempfling added a game-high 12 rebounds.
Six local schools were in attendance as part of Ball State's third annual Field Trip Day.
Ball State is back in action this Saturday, Jan. 12, as part of a home doubleheader against Ohio. The men tip at noon with the women to follow at 2:30 p.m. The women's game will be broadcast on ESPN3.
