Women's Basketball Falls To Ohio In MAC Action, 90-75
January 12, 2019 | Women's Basketball
MUNCIE, Ind. - The Cardinals (6-9, 1-2 MAC) placed four players in double figures, with sophomore guard Maliah Howard-Bass leading the way with a 16-point performance, but Ball State was unable to overcome Ohio's (13-1, 2-1 MAC) outside game in a 90-75 loss to the Bobcats on Saturday at University Arena.
Freshman forward Thelma Dis Agustsdottir and classmate guard Gabby Smith added 13 points, which was a career high for Smith. Senior guard Nakeya Penny rounded out the double figure scoring with 11. Defensively, sophomore forward Oshlynn Brown led all players with 13 rebounds.
"The loss stings but the fight that we played with and the determination, I thought we fought on the boards and in the paint," Ball State head coach Brady Sallee said. "We won the in the points in the paint battle which is something we knew we had to do. I am proud of the fight my team played with and the way we prepared to play in this game. Of course you tip your cap to Ohio U it is a really good basketball team and we showed a lot of good stuff today."
Dis Agustsdottir was active early on for the Cardinals, scoring all 13 points in the first half. Ohio then held Agustsdottir scoreless after the break.
Much of the first half was highlighted by both teams playing a fast pace offense. The Cardinals led by five on three separate occasions, the last time was at the 3:00 minute mark.
Ohio then regained control after a 5-0 run to take a 22-20 advantage into the second quarter. Ball State continued to play close and had a nice little run in the second frame, after the Bobcats had went up by 14 (39-25) by the 4:22 mark. The Cardinals fought back and would close the second period with a 10-1 scoring spree, cutting the Bobcats lead to five (40-35) at the half.
The Bobcats outscored the Cardinals 22-10 in the third quarter and shot 55 percent (10-of-17) from behind the arc in the fourth frame. Ohio's second half offensive became too much for the Cardinals to overcome the remainder of the contest.
The Ball State women's basketball team continues Mid-American Conference action when it travels to Buffalo Wednesday for a 7 p.m. tipoff in University Arena.
