Cardinals make annual trip to Weibring Golf Club for Redbird Invitational
The Ball State women's golf program is experiencing quite a youth movement as it begins tournament play for the 2018-19 season this weekend at Weibring Golf Club in Normal, Illinois.
The Cardinals head to Illinois State's annual Redbird Invitational with one junior, two sophomores and three freshmen in tow. There is not a single senior on this year's roster. It's a group short on years but not necessarily on experience, at least at the top of the lineup.
Manon Tounalom is the most veteran of the returning trio, back for her third season in Muncie. The junior from France was Ball State's top golfer all of last season, leading the team in nine of its 11 events and finishing with a 76.65 scoring average. She placed 10th last year at the Redbird Invite.
The two sophomores on this year's roster gained valuable experience a year ago and are looking to build on solid rookie campaigns. Liz Kim competed in every event last season and started her sophomore year on the right foot by leading the Cardinals with a round of 76 in a dual match with Dayton last week.
Classmate Emily Knouff came on strong last spring to end the year with the team's second-best scoring average. She was also the Cardinals' No. 2 finisher at the 2018 Mid-American Conference Championships behind Tounalom.
The youthful veterans will be joined in the lineup this week by freshmen Hadley Moritz and Morgan Lewis. Dylann Armstrong, another freshman, will compete as an individual.
Moritz, who spent her freshman year at Noblesville High School in Indiana, played her final three at Wheaton Warrenville South in Illinois. She competed in the Illinois state finals three times and won a team state championship.
Lewis was a two-time all-state selection at Fishers High School outside of Indianapolis, where she set the school records for 9- and 18-hole scores. She led the Tigers to the state finals three times and finished sixth individually as a senior last fall.
Armstrong joins the Cardinals from Canada, where she was ranked among the top 15 in both Quebec and Ontario. She won five tournaments in 2017 and finished second at the Ontario Juvenile Championship.
The Cardinals also have two more freshmen on the roster who will look to contribute this season -- Elizabeth Amendola from Florida and Ja Santadusit from Thailand.
The Redbird Invitational gets underway Sunday at Weibring with 36 holes of play. The final 18 holes will be played Monday. Here are the tournament details …
