September 15, 2018 | Field Hockey
MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State field hockey team (0-7, 0-1 MAC) fell to Miami University (4-4, 1-0 MAC) Saturday afternoon by a score of 4-0 at the Briner Sports Complex. It was the Mid-American Conference opener for both schools today.
Both teams opened up the first 35 minutes of play with strong defense. The RedHawks then scored their first goal at the 12:48 mark of the first quarter after Leonor Berlie hit a shot off a penalty corner. Minutes later, Paula Portugal and Allie Grace Joyner both connected to give Miami a 3-0 edge at intermission.
Ball State came out strong defensively in the second half and held Miami scoreless up until the 56:08 mark. Miami would strike one more time with about 15 minutes remaining in regulation.
Offensively, three Cardinals got shots off but unfortunately couldn't score. Defensively, goal keeper Grace Chavez had a strong game with 12 saves which is one shy of her season high. She now has registered 55 saves so far this season.
The Ball State field hockey team will enjoy some time off and will be back in action at the Briner Sports Complex when it hosts the University of California Davis Monday, Sept. 24 at 1 p.m.
