Field Hockey Suffers Heartbreaking OT Loss To UC Davis
September 24, 2018 | Field Hockey
MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State field hockey team suffered a 5-4 heartbreaking loss to UC Davis in a Monday matinee at the Briner Sports Complex. With the loss, the Cardinals fall to 0-8 on the season while the Aggies evened their overall record to 6-6.
Redshirt sophomore Sierra Jefferson scored a quick goal with only 12 seconds shaved off the game clock to give Ball State the early 1-0 edge over UC Davis. Both teams played stellar defense for the next 20 minutes of play until redshirt junior Michelle Shampton put the Cardinals up 2-0 with 15 minutes remaining in the first period.
After that, UC Davis found its offensive groove and would score back-to-back goals to even the score at 2-2. Junior Haley Jolly scored right before intermission for Ball State to give the Cardinals the 3-2 advantage at the half over the Aggies. It marked the first time this season that Ball State had led heading into the second period.
UC Davis then scored quickly to open the second half, tying the game 3-3. After that, it remained a close contest before the Aggies took a 4-3 lead over Ball State with less than 10 minutes to play in regulation. Redshirt sophomore Rachel Pereria came to the Cardinals rescue knotting the score at 4-4 to send the game into overtime.
UC Davis took control over the Cardinals in OT and would quickly score the game winner off of an unassisted goal from the Aggies Eline van den Bosch.
The Ball State field hockey team now heads to North Carolina for two games when the Cardinals face Appalachian State (Sept. 28) at 3 p.m. and University of North Carolina (Sept. 30) at 1 p.m.
