BSU Celebrates Senior Night With 3-1 Win Over Omaha
September 14, 2018 | Soccer
MUNCIE, Ind. – In its first home match of the season and the night on which it honored its seniors, the Ball State University soccer team erased an 0-1 deficit by scoring three-unanswered, second-half goals to defeat Omaha, 3-1, on Friday night at Briner Sports Complex.
The Cardinals improved their record to 4-1-1 on the year while Omaha fell to 2-5-1.
BSU got nine shots off, eight of which were on goal. The Cardinal defense held Omaha to just three shots on goal. Omaha had six corners while Ball State earned three, and Tristin Stuteville recorded two saves. There were no cards shown throughout the match.
"It was already a special night because of senior night, but it makes it even better when you can play well and get a win," said head coach Craig Roberts. "We obviously never want to concede the first goal like that, but I thought the girls responded and did well to keep attacking and convert the chances they created."
After a scoreless first half, Omaha broke through for the first goal of the match when Emily Romero hit the bottom-right corner of the net to put the Mavericks up 1-0 in the 58th minute. The lead was short lived though, as BSU then exploded for three goals.
The first came on a corner kick by senior Alessandra Fistrovich in the 69th minute. She sent the ball to the far post where Julia Elvbo rose up to head it in to the top-left corner of the net. Seven minutes later, senior Paula Guerrero and freshman Tatiana Mason teamed up for a pair of goals in just over a minute.
Guerrero sent a great pass through the defense to Mason on the left side where she beat the keeper to the bottom-left corner of the goal in the 76th minute. In the 78th, Mason returned the favor by crossing the ball to Guerrero from the left side and she tapped it in to the bottom-right corner. The goal was the first of Guerrero's career as it poetically occurred on senior night.
Before the match, Ball State honored a senior class of 10 members. Stuteville, Lauren Roll, Amanda Shaw, Guerrero, Allison Abbe, Taylor Pooley, Emily Scott, Lauren Lerew, Fistrovich and Jordan Edouard were all recognized. All 10 saw playing time during the match.
Friday's win marks the end of nonconference play for the Cardinals. They will now prepare for the start of MAC competition as Toledo will come to Briner Sports Complex next Friday (Sept. 21).
