Â
MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State field hockey team returns to the Briner Sports Complex Saturday when it hosts Miami University in its Mid-American Conference opener at noon.Â
Â
The Cardinals (0-6) are looking for their first win of the season under first-year head coach Stephanie Bernthal. Last weekend, Ball State suffered losses to Big Ten foe Ohio State (6-0) and Lehigh (2-1).   Against the Mountain Hawks, Michelle Shampton scored the Cardinals' lone goal in the 37th minute, connecting on a penalty corner entry pass from Rachel Pereira to give BSU a 1-0 lead.  But the lead lasted less than three minutes, unfortunately, as Lehigh converted a penalty corner of its own in the 39th minute with Maddie Monahan deflecting a pass in.  The Mountain Hawks scored again in the 54th minute with an unassisted goal from Olivia Perrone that proved to be the game-winner.
Â
The Cardinals will now open MAC action against the RedHawks Saturday. Â Miami enters the contest with a 3-4 ledger. Â The RedHawks have lost their last three contests. Â Last year, the two programs closed out their 2017 season against each other in Oxford, Ohio resulting in a 7-1 loss for the Cardinals. Â Ball State last defeated Miami on Oct. 17, 2006 by a score of 3-1 in Oxford, Ohio. Â The RedHawks have won 12 straight over the Cardinals.
Â
After this weekend, Ball State will continue its two-game homestand at the Briner Sports Complex when it hosts the University of California Davis Monday, Sept. 24 at 1 p.m.Â
