Cardinals earn 1-0 win in exhibition with Eastern Illinois
August 10, 2018 | Soccer
MUCNIE, Ind. – In the lone tune up before the start of the regular season, the Ball State University soccer team earned a 1-0 victory over Eastern Illinois in an exhibition match at Briner Sports Complex on Friday evening.
The match featured three 30-minute periods. The Panthers recorded seven shots to Ball State's six, but Lauren Roll scored the lone goal of the match in the third period to lift BSU to the win.
"I felt that we learned a lot from the game in regard to what we need to address and what we need to do. Our mentality was good overall, we just needed to come out stronger from the start," said head coach Craig Roberts. "Everybody contributed and did really well as far as their efforts and doing what we asked them to do. I felt we dominated the game throughout, we just need to find a way to convert more goals so we aren't just winning one to zero."
Both teams managed to put one shot on goal in the opening segment but could not find the back of the net. Cardinal goalkeeper Tristin Stuteville made an early save to keep the Panthers off the board.
Ball State opened the second period with a good look at goal but could not convert as the EIU keeper made a great save. The teams then traded possession for the remainder of the half before the Panthers put two shots on goal, both of which were saved by Stuteville.
Five minutes into the final period of play the Cardinals earned a corner kick and Roll found the back of the net to put Ball State up 1-0. Eastern Illinois responded with a few scattered shots through the remainder of the match but could not score as Ball State held on for the 1-0 victory.
Next up for Ball State is the regular season opener. The Cardinals will travel north to take on Purdue Fort Wayne on Friday, Aug. 17, at 5:00 p.m.
