Timothy Wiseman Qualifies for U.S. Open
Fresh of his junior season, Timothy Wiseman became the first Ball State golfer ever to compete in a major championship while still in school.
Â
Wiseman emerged from a three-for-two playoff in his sectional qualifier at Springfield Country Club in Ohio after carding rounds of 68 and 70 to tie for fourth place. He earned one of 71 available qualifying spots among a mass of more than 800 competitors at 11 sites across the country and in England.
Â
The Corydon, Indiana, native then made his way to Shinnecock to compete against the best in the world on one of the most challenging courses in the country. He acquitted himself well, bouncing back from an opening-round 83 to post a second-round 75 that was better than some of the top players in the game.
Â
Wiseman became Ball State's eighth representative in one of golf's four majors but the first to achieve that feat before leaving school.
Â
His spot in the U.S. Open also automatically qualified him for next week's U.S. Amateur Championship at Pebble Beach in California. After that, he will return to campus as the elder statesman for a BSU program looking to build on back-to-back runner-up finishes at the MAC Championships.
