Indiana State Jumps On Top of Ball State Early, Holds on For 10-6 Win
April 25, 2018 | Baseball
MUNCIE, Ind. – Indiana State scored three runs in the second inning and three more in the third, and never looked back in a 10-6 victory over the Ball State baseball team Wednesday afternoon at First Merchants Ballpark Complex.
Indiana State (20-17) starting pitcher Weston Rivers stymied the Cardinals through five innings, limiting Ball State (19-20) to just one hit and an unearned run. Clay Dungan came through with a two-out, two-run single in the second inning to make the score 3-0. Three walks and a key fielding error allowed the Sycamores to add three more runs in the third.
The Sycamores put the game away with three more runs in the sixth to push the cushion to 9-1. Dan Giesler, who finished 3-for-4 at the plate, highlighted the inning with a two-run home run, his 10th of the season.
Ball State's bats came alive a little too late in the game. The Cardinals rallied with three runs on five hits in the eighth inning. However, a double play ball put a halt to an even bigger inning. In the ninth, Ball State loaded the bases, but could only push across one run.
The top three hitters in Ball State's lineup – sophomore Noah Powell, junior Chase Sebby and senior Jeff Riedel – each notched two hits. Riedel tallied a pair of RBIs. Junior Nick Floyd had the best showing of the seven Ball State pitchers used against Indiana State. The righty went 2.2 innings, struck out three batters and held the Sycamores to one hit.
Ball State continues its home stand with a three-game series against league opponent Northern Illinois this weekend. Game one is set for Friday, April 27 at 3 p.m.
