Cardinals Win On Wintner’s Walk-Off Single in the 11th Inning
April 27, 2018 | Baseball
MUNCIE, Ind.– Freshman Rhett Wintner came through with a two-out infield single to score senior Colin Brockhouse in the 11th inning to lift the Ball State baseball team to a 3-2 win over Northern Illinois Friday afternoon. This was Ball State's third walk-off victory of the season.
Brockhouse ripped a one-out double to the right center gap in the 11th to get into scoring position. Junior Zach Milam nearly ended the game himself, but his long fly ball to right field was caught up against the fence by Northern Illinois' Hunter Bross. Brockhouse was able to advance to third on the fly ball. Wintner then dug himself into a 1-2 hole against NIU pitcher Nate Thomas. However, Wintner rolled a ball deep into the hole on the left side of the infield and easily beat the throw from Northern Illinois shortstop Tommy Szczasny.
Scoring was hard to come by as both starting pitchers had strong outings. Ball State (20-20, 8-8 MAC) starter John Baker gave up a pair of runs in the second inning and then limited Northern Illinois (15-26, 5-11) to just two hits the following five innings. The righty was able to force the Huskies into three double plays, including one in the sixth inning when NIU had runners on first and third with just one out.
NIU's Tanner Foster worked eight innings and made one mistake. Junior Chase Sebby hit his first home run as a Cardinal, a two-run blast to right field, in the third inning to knot the score at 2-all. Foster struck out eight batters and did not allow a walk. He worked out of a jam in the eighth when Ball State put runners on first and second with no outs. Foster responded with a pair of strikeouts and ground out to avoid giving up the go-ahead run.
Northern Illinois' best chance to score in the extra innings came in the 10th when the Huskies worked back-to-back walks. Ball State reliever Nolan Gazouski ended the threat by inducing a harmless ground ball to third base.
Brockhouse had the best day at the plate for the Cardinals. The outfielder went 3-for-5 with two doubles and scored the winning run. Sophomore Noah Powell also notched multiple hits for the sixth time in the last eight games.
Ball State also won on a walk-off on Feb. 17 when junior Griffin Hulecki tallied an RBI single in the bottom of the 10th inning to give the Cardinals a 4-3 win over UMass Lowell. Two weeks ago, senior Seth Freed blasted a solo home run in the bottom of the ninth to wrap up a 13-12 win over Miami.
The two teams will continue their series tomorrow, April 28. First pitch at First Merchants Ballpark Complex is set for 1 p.m.
