MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State men's volleyball team continues conference tournament action on Wednesday, April 18 at 8 p.m. Eastern Time. The three seeded Cardinals will travel to take on the two seeded Loyola Ramblers in the MIVA semifinals.
Ball State hits the road after sweeping McKendree (26-24, 25-20, 25-23) at home in the MIVA Quarterfinals last Saturday. Mitch Weiler, Matt Szews and Matt Walsh each notched 10 kills to lead the team. Szews also led the team in aces (4) and in digs (7). Walsh led the way in blocks with five. Jake Romano had 36 assists, two aces and two blocks in that contest.
The Cardinals will hope to continue their current five match win streak when they battle the Ramblers. However, Ball State has struggled on the road this season going 6-9 when outside Worthen Arena.
Scouting Loyola:
The Ramblers will enter the semifinal match with a 22-6 overall record, 11-3 in the MIVA. In order to reach the semifinal match, Loyola took down Lindenwood last Saturday in a sweep (25-19, 25-21, 25-22). Ricky Gevis led the way for the team with 13 kills. Collin Mahan added 10 kills, three assists and an ace in the 3-0 win.
Ball State and Loyola have split on the season. The Cardinals took down the Ramblers are home, 3-1 (34-32, 20-25, 25-23, 25-21) back in February. Szews, Weiler and Blake Reardon all tallied double digit kills in that contest. Szews led the way with 16 with 14 added by both Weiler and Reardon. Weiler also had 12 digs and three assists. Romano led the team in assists (44), digs (13), and aces (2).
When the Cardinals traveled to Chicago for the second matchup, they were quickly swept by Loyola (25-21, 25-20, 29-27). In that contest, Szews had 12 kills, two aces and a block. Reardon added seven kills and one block. Weiler led the way in digs with five.
These two team met last year in the MIVA quarterfinals where the Cardinals prevailed, 3-1 (17-25, 25-19, 25-18, 25-23).
