Men’s Volleyball Ends Season with 3-1 Semifinal Loss

CHICAGO, Ill.— The Ball State men's volleyball team traveled to Loyola to take on the Ramblers in MIVA Tournament Semifinal action Wednesday night. The Cardinals were hoping to break the 20 match drought inside Gentile Arena, but came up just short. Ball State fell to Loyola, 3-1 (25-22, 19-25, 15-25, 25-22), ending their 2018 season.
The Cardinals had 41 kills on 41 assists for only a .182 hitting percentage. The team also had 47 digs, eight blocks and five service aces in the contest.
Leading the way for Ball State was freshmen Ben Chinnici. Chinnici had 15 kills on a .324 hitting percentage. The outside attacker also had eight digs and one assist for the night. Matt Walsh also notched double digit kills. The senior had 12 kills along with three blocks. Another senior, Mitch Weiler, led the Cardinals in digs with 11. Weiler also had eight digs, two blocks and one assist in his final collegiate contest. Parker Swartz got in on the action adding two kills along with six digs and a team-high three aces. Jake Romano tallied 38 assists. The setter also added six digs, two aces and two kills. Nick LaVanchy added seven digs on the night.
Ball State came out ready to fight in the opening set. The Cardinals hit for .448 on 14 kills. Chinnici led the way with five kills. Walsh added four of his own. Matt Szews led the way in digs with three. Ball State was able to take set number one, 25-22, on a Romano service ace.
Momentum shifted in the direction of Loyola in the second set. Loyola was able to hold Ball State to only a .214 hitting percentage while knocking down 13 kills for a .407 hitting percentage of their own. The Ramblers evened the playing field by taking set number two, 25-19. Weiler had a set-high four kills for the Cardinals with three knocked down by both Chinnici and Walsh. Swartz led the way in digs with four.
The third set was all Loyola from the very beginning. The Ramblers held Ball State to only six kills on 27 attempts and six errors. The Cardinals only tallied nine digs and two blocks in set number three. The Cardinals fell in that set, 25-15.
Set number four saw 13 tied scores and four lead changes before the Ramblers took the set, 25-22, on a Cardinal ball handling error. Walsh had five kills to lead the team with four added by Chinnici. Ball State had 18 digs, four blocks and one ace in the final set.
The Ball State men's volleyball team finishes the season with an 18-12 overall record and 11-5 in MIVA play.
