Men’s Volleyball Sweeps McKendree to Advance to MIVA Semifinals

MUNCIE, Ind.— The quarterfinals of the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association kicked off Saturday night with one match hosted inside Worthen Arena. The Ball State men's volleyball team, who is the three seed in the MIVA Tournament, hosted the six seeded McKendree Bearcats. The Cardinals took down McKendree, 3-0 (26-24, 25-20, 25-23), to advance to the next round of the tournament.
Ball State had 42 total kills on 40 assists. The Cardinals hit for .330 while adding 25 total digs. With nine total service aces, Ball State sets a new season high. Ball State also had 7.5 total team blocks: two solo and 11 block assists.
Three Cardinals were able to tally double digit kills in the MIVA Tournament victory. Mitch Weiler, Matt Szews and Matt Walsh notched 10 kills apiece. Szews also led the way in digs with seven while Walsh led the way with five total blocks. Szews also had a season high nine service aces in the match. Ben Chinnici added four kills with two by Parker Swartz. Jake Romano had 36 assists, two kills, two aces and three digs.
The opening set was a tight one seeing seven tied scores and three lead changes. The Cardinals led by as many as five before the Bearcats came back to tie the contest 18-18. Ball State was able to eventually take set one, 26-24. Leading the way for the Cardinals was Walsh with four kills and a .600 hitting percentage. Szews and Weiler were each able to knock down three kills apiece. Weiler led the way in digs with three. As a team, Ball State had 14 kills on a .357 hitting percentage. The team also had two service aces, nine digs and 10 total blocks.
Ball State came out to score the first two points of set number two. The Cardinals controlled the tempo of most of the set, winning 25-20. Chinnici and Szews each had four kills in the second set with two added by both Weiler and Walsh. The second set also saw five aces, seven digs and three total blocks.
Tensions rose in the third set with 14 tied scores and four lead changes. Weiler had five kills with four added by Walsh. Szews had three of the team's nine digs to lead the Cardinals. Jake Romano had 12 assists in the set. Swartz had one kill which happened to be the game winner as the Cardinals took set number three, 25-23.
Ball State advances to the semifinals to take on the two seeded Loyola. The Cardinals will travel to Loyola on Wednesday, April 18 for a 7:00 p.m. first serve.
