MUNCIE, Ind. – The 11th ranked Ball State men's volleyball team has two huge matches this week as they continue MIVA play. The Cardinals will travel to take on the current conference leader Loyola-Chicago Thursday, March 22 at 9 p.m. ET. Ball State will then head to Lewis to take on the 10th ranked Flyers.
Ball State is currently tied for second in the MIVA with Ohio State. Loyola is leading the conference while Lewis is in the fourth spot.
Ball State will go into these two matches after taking down No. 15 Fort Wayne twice last week. In the first meeting, the Cardinals took down the Mastodons, 3-2 (21-25, 25-22, 21-25, 25-22, 15-10) in Fort Wayne. Matt Szews had 16 kills, eight digs and two service aces in that contest. Matt Walsh added 11 kills and nine blocks. Mitch Weiler notched nine kills, seven digs and six blocks. The Cardinals took down Fort Wayne again in Muncie in a sweep (25-21, 25-22, 25-20). Szews had 13 kills with seven added by Walsh. Ben Chinnici had six kills along with one assist. Adam Wessel led the team in digs with 10. Weiler was able to tally seven digs and four blocks. Jake Romano finished the day with 35 assists, six digs and three blocks. Walsh was named MIVA Defensive Player of the Week for his performances in those two matches. He totaled 15 blocks for 1.88 blocks per set along with 18 kills for a .444 hitting percentage. Walsh finished the week with 26 points.
Scouting Loyola:
The last time Ball State took on Loyola was in Muncie on Feb. 17, 2018 where the Cardinals prevailed, 3-1 (34-32, 20-25, 25-23, 25-21). Szews had 16 kills, six digs and two service aces in that meeting. Blake Reardon added 14 kills with 14 knocked down by Weiler. Weiler also had 12 digs, right behind Romano's 13 digs. The Ramblers still lead the all-time series, 29-23.
Collin Mahan is fifth in the conference with 3.51 kills per set along with sitting in third in total kills (274). Garrett Zolg is ranked in the MIVA in three different categories. Zolg sits at fifth place in total digs (2.21) along with third in digs (166) and second in assists per set (10.43). Jeff Jendryk is atop the conference with a .475 hitting percentage.
Scouting Lewis:
Ball State leads the all-time series against Lewis, 30-29. The last meeting was on Feb. 16, 2018 in Worthen Arena where the Cardinals won, 3-0 (25-22, 25-19, 25-20). Reardon led the way in that one with 14 kills and two assists. Weiler had 12 kills, seven digs and four blocks. Walsh added eight kills, four blocks and one service ace. Romano led the team in assists (30), digs (14) and aces (3).
Ryan Coenen leads the team in kills with 235, which places him fifth in the conference. Coenen averages 3.62 kills per set, which is third best in the MIVA so far. He has a total of 285 points so far this season. Tyler Mitchem has 123 kills and a .418 hitting percentage. That hitting percentage places Mitchem second in the MIVA. He is also third in the conference with 1.14 blocks per set.
