Cardinals Split Doubleheader at Dayton; Win Game Two, 10-2
March 17, 2018 | Baseball
DAYTON, Ohio – Ball State and Dayton split a pair of baseball games Saturday afternoon with the host Flyers taking game one, 3-0, before the Cardinals responded with 10 runs in the game two victory.
Dayton (5-9) starting pitcher Austin Cline threw a complete game shutout in the opener. The junior righty struck out nine batters and limited Ball State (9-10) to three singles to earn his first collegiate shutout.
In the nightcap, the Cardinals quickly jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning and didn't look back. Redshirt freshman Tim Blankenberger, making his first two collegiate starts today, notched the key hit in the first, a two-out single to score senior Colin Brockhouse.
Ball State added two more runs in both the third and fourth innings to open up a 7-0 cushion.
Senior Jeff Riedel recorded his eighth multi-hit game in 15 appearances this season. The outfielder went 3-for-5 with a walk, two stolen bases and two runs scored from the leadoff position. Junior Griffin Hulecki and freshman Noah Navarro each added two RBIs. The top four batters in the Ball State lineup all scored twice in the victory.
On the mound, junior TJ Harmon earned the win as the righty went 5.0 innings, struck out five batters and held Dayton to one run on four hits. Fellow junior T.J. Baker did not give up a hit in the ensuing 3.0 innings.
The two teams will wrap up the four-game series back in Muncie tomorrow, March 18. First pitch at First Merchants Ballpark Complex is set for 1 p.m.
