Ball State Earns Series Split With Dayton Thanks to 3-2 Victory
March 18, 2018 | Baseball
MUNCIE, Ind. – Junior Griffin Hulecki's two-out RBI single in the seventh inning proved to be the difference in the Ball State baseball team's 3-2 win over Dayton Sunday afternoon at First Merchants Ballpark Complex.
Dayton (5-10) won the first two games of the four-game set, but Ball State (10-10) responded by taking the final two contests.
The Cardinals never trailed in the series finale, taking leads of 1-0 and 2-1. Junior John Ricotta got Ball State on the board with an RBI single up in the middle in the second inning.
After Dayton's Connor Echols notched a solo home run to begin the third inning, senior Colin Brockhouse hit a towering home run to left center in the fifth to put the Cardinals back in front. The Flyers manufactured a run without a hit in the sixth to level the game at 2-all.
In the bottom of the seventh, Brockhouse kept the inning alive with an infield single to put runners on first and third with two outs. Hulecki then came through with a solid single up the middle to plate sophomore Noah Powell.
Ball State's pitchers struck out 14 batters and held Dayton to four hits. Freshman Drey Jameson went 6.0 innings and equaled his season-high with nine strikeouts in his second start of 2018. The only hit Jameson allowed was Echols' home run.
Sophomore Nolan Gazouski (1-2) earned his first victory as a Cardinal thanks to keeping Dayton off the scoreboard over the final three innings. Gazouski worked out of a jam in the ninth inning. After the first two batters singled to put runners at the corners, Gazouski came back with a strike out, fielder's choice on a squeeze attempt and another strike out.
Next up for Ball State is a home game against Purdue this Tuesday, March 20 at 3 p.m.
