Ball State Explodes for 14 Runs in Win Over Iowa
February 24, 2018 | Baseball
NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Ball State baseball team wrapped up play at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Baseball Classic Saturday by splitting a pair of contests. The Cardinals rolled to a 14-6 win over Iowa in the afternoon game and then fell to Virginia Tech in the nightcap, 4-2.
The Cardinals (3-4) exploded for a season high in runs against the Hawkeyes. Ball State trailed early by a count of 2-0, but responded with two runs in the third inning and seven in the fourth to break open the game. Seniors Seth Freed and Colin Brockhouse, along with junior Zach Milam all homered in the victory.
Brockhouse hit a three-run long ball as a part of the seven-run fourth inning. Milam's home run was his first as a collegiate player and was also a three-run shot in the eighth inning.
Freshman pitcher Kyle Nicolas tallied his first collegiate victory. The righty went five innings and struck out four batters. He worked out of a bases loaded jam in the fourth and then retired Iowa in order in the fifth inning to cap his outing. Meanwhile, fellow freshman pitcher Drey Jameson struck out nine batters in three innings of relief work.
Against Virginia Tech, the Hokies scored a pair of runs in the first and third innings, all with two outs, to open a 4-0 lead.
Ball State finally got on the board in the seventh inning thanks to an RBI groundout from senior Justin Kirkpatrick. Milam then tallied a two-out RBI single to cut the deficit to 4-2.
The Cardinals put the first two hitters on base in the eighth inning, but were unable to push any more runs across home plate.
Milam led Ball State at the plate over the three games in New Orleans. The third baseman hit .429 with a home run, four RBIs and two runs scored. Jeff Riedel and Brockhouse each finished with batting averages better than .350 while Riedel notched a .538 on-base percentage.
Ball State returns to action next weekend at the Johnny Gardner Law Group Tournament in Conway, South Carolina. The Cardinals will face host Coastal Carolina, Radford and Maryland.
