Coastal Carolina Downs Ball State, 6-3
March 02, 2018 | Baseball
CONWAY, S.C. – The Ball State baseball team opened its Spring Break trip with a 6-3 loss to host Coastal Carolina Friday afternoon. The game was the first of three for the Cardinals in the Johnny Gardner Law Group Tournament.
Coastal Carolina (9-2) jumped on top of the Cardinals (3-5) with four runs in the third inning and never trailed. Kieton Rivers had the big hit in the inning, a bases loaded double to score the first two runs of the game.
Ball State quickly mounted a charge in the top of the fourth inning. The Cardinals capitalized on two walks and three hit batters to plate three runs and cut the deficit to 4-3. Juniors Griffin Hulecki, Chase Sebby and John Ricotta were all credited with RBIs.
The Chanticleers added insurance runs in the fifth and eighth innings to account for the final score. Ball State put two runners on base in both the sixth and ninth innings, but could not come up with a run-producing hit.
The two teams combined for just eight hits. There were 10 walks and six hit batters in the contest.
Junior Nick Floyd pitched the first two innings for the Cardinals and held Coastal Carolina without a hit. Three other Ball State pitchers were used as head coach Rich Maloney opted to use a pitching committee in Friday's game.
This is the fourth straight year Ball State has made a visit to Coastal Carolina.
Ball State continues action in South Carolina tomorrow morning, March 3 against Radford. First pitch at Springs Brooks Stadium is slated for 11 a.m.
