Strong Third Quarter Lifts WBB Past Northern Illinois, 72-50

DEKALB, Ill. - The Ball State women's basketball team (21-4, 10-4 MAC) had a big third quarter to lift the Cardinals past Northern Illinois (13-12, 5-9 MAC) by a score of 72-50 Saturday afternoon in the Convocation Center.
Junior guard Jasmin Samz tied her career-high, leading the Cardinals with an 18-point performance off of 7-of-10 shooting from the field. Senior forward Destiny Washington had 13 points while classmates, senior guard Frannie Frazier and senior forward Moriah Monaco chipped in 11-points apiece. Junior guard Carmen Grande ended the day with 12 assists and freshman forward Oshlynn Brown led defensively with 10 rebounds.
With the win, sixth year head coach Brady Sallee has never lost at Northern Illinois and owns a perfect 6-0 ledger in DeKalb.
The Cardinals outscored the Huskies 16-to-7 by the 3:14 mark of the first quarter. After that, Ball State went silent, allowing Northern Illinois to go on a 5-0 run which the Huskies carried into the start of the second frame. A basket from Washington and free throws from Frazier put Ball State back up by six (20-14) with 6:41 to play in the half. The Huskies responded with an 8-3 run to make it a one-point ball game. Samz answered for the Cardinals with back-to-back 3-pointers sparking an 11-0 run to push Ball State's lead to 34-22 at intermission. Neither team shot particularly well in the first half, Ball State went 13-of-40 (32.5 percent) from the floor and Northern Illinois finished 7-of-29 (24.1 percent) from the field. Samz led the Cardinals at the half with 16 points.
Northern Illinois went on a 13-6 run over the first five minutes of the third quarter and a layup from Nicole Orr cut Ball State's lead to five at 40-35. The Cardinals answered with an 18-0 scoring spree to take its largest lead of the contest 58-35 heading into the final frame. Monaco had been held scoreless in the first half but made up for it in the third quarter, scoring 11 of the Cardinals 24 points. Ball State also clicked offensively having its strongest shooting performance of the game, after shooting 50 percent (10-of-20) from the field.
The Cardinals closed out strong eventually building a 25-point cushion with 7:59 remaining in the contest. Ball State's third quarter proved to be too much for the Huskies to overcome in the final frame allowing the Cardinals to win their 10th conference victory of the season.
The Ball State women's basketball team continues Mid-American Conference action at home Wednesday against Western Michigan at 7 p.m. in Worthen Arena. The Cardinals recently won their first meeting against the Broncos in Kalamazoo by a score of 81-71.
