Cardinals Suffer Heartbreaker in MAC Championship
November 04, 2018 | Soccer
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Ball State University soccer team took the Mid-American Conference Championship all the way to a sixth round of penalty kicks, but came up short as it fell to Bowling Green, 1-1, and 5-4 in PK's at Cochrane Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The Cardinals finish the 2018 season with a record of 14-3-3 and as the MAC runner up.
"You can't fault our effort today," said head coach Craig Roberts. "The girls left it all out on the field and unfortunately came up short. Anything can happen when you get to PK's and we were on the wrong side of it. It was an incredible season by these girls and they certainly deserved to be here."
Bowling Green grabbed the first lead as it drew a foul in the box for a penalty kick in the 27th minute. Both teams had chances for the remainder of the half, but neither could convert as the Falcons carried their 1-0 lead into the break.
Ball State came out firing in the second half and it paid off as Emily Simmons headed in a goal off a corner kick from Paula Guerrero in the 54th minute. It was the first goal of the season for Simmons and it gave the Cardinals new life.
Both sides fought for the remainder of regulation but could not find the back of the net. The match continued in overtime but no goal after 20 extra minutes moved things into penalty kicks to decide the championship.
The Cardinals took an early advantage in PK's as Shelby Kean and Simmons buried the first two attempts, and Tristin Stuteville saved BGSU's second shot. Leading 3-2 and with a chance to snag the title, Jenna Dombrowski stepped up to the spot for BSU but the Bowling Green keeper made a diving save to extend the match. The Falcons converted their next two attempts while Ball State missed, and Bowling Green sealed the win.
Ball State tallied 18 shots to 17 for BGSU and put six on goal. Both teams were awarded six corners on the afternoon. Stuteville finished the match with three saves.
