The Ball State men's basketball team takes the court for the first time this season Friday with an exhibition against UIndy. It is the Cardinals' lone tuneup before the Nov. 6 season opener against Indiana State.
Setting the Stage
• Ball State hosts UIndy in exhibition action for the second time in three years. BSU won 74-64 in its 2016 preseason matchup with the Greyhounds behind double-doubles from Tahjai Teague (16 points, 12 rebounds) and Tayler Persons (13 points, 10 assists). UIndy plays a Thursday exhibition at Valparaiso before heading to Muncie.
• Ball State is coming off a 19-13 campaign and is averaging 20.3 wins over the past three years under head coach James Whitford. UIndy finished 19-9 last season, its 10th under head coach Stan Gouard. Senior forward Jesse Kempson is the team's top returner after averaging 12.2 points and 5.5 rebounds last year.
• BSU welcomes back seven of the eight players who were part of the rotation at the end of last season. The Cardinals return 76.3 percent of their scoring, 75.1 percent of their rebounding and 77.9 percent of their assists. Persons (15.0), Teague (12.1) and Trey Moses (11.3) all averaged double-figure scoring a year ago.
• Freshman Jarron Coleman and a trio of transfers are set to debut for the Cardinals. Ball State fans will get their first look at Missouri transfer K.J. Walton, Arkansas transfer Brachen Hazen and Central Connecticut graduate transfer Austin Nehls.
• Ball State was picked to finish second in the MAC West Division in the league's preseason poll, receiving 11 first-place votes to Eastern Michigan's 17.
• The UIndy roster features a familiar face in former Ball State walk-on guard Tye Wilburn. The Gary, Indiana, product spent the 2014-15 season redshirting in Muncie before moving on. He spent two seasons at Wright State before making his way to UIndy, where he will play his fifth year.
