MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State field hockey team will head to Oxford, Ohio, and the campus of Miami University to play in the Mid-American Conference Tournament Thursday.
The Cardinals finished their regular season with an overall record of 2-15 while owning a 2-4 MAC ledger. Ball State enters the tournament as the No. 4 seed and will take on the No. 5 Ohio University Bobcats (4-11, 2-4 MAC) on Thursday at 10:30 a.m.
"Our focus this entire season has been on taking everything thrown at us along the way and peaking at the right time," Ball State field hockey coach Stephanie Bernthal said. "Each win/loss has been valuable because this group has responded and fought harder. Most people will only see box scores and the season's record, but we talk daily about how proud we are about the 'unseen' things happening in this program.
"The disappointment of not getting more W's has kept us humble and hungry. It has also made this team more unified, which any coach will say is rare with such a difficult season. That is a tribute to our student-athletes and the team's leadership. When you have those intangibles in place, you are in a great spot entering the postseason. Everyone's record is moot at this point, and it's one game at a time from here. We are on a quest to bring championships back to this program and excited to go after it this week."
During the regular season, Ball State defeated Ohio 3-2 in double overtime at the Briner Sports Complex on Oct. 5. Rachel Periera, who was recently named to the All-MAC Second Team, scored the game-winner against the Bobcats. Since 2006, the Bobcats are 11-4 against the Cardinals. Ball State has won its last two meetings against Ohio. The Cardinals' last appearance in the MAC Tournament resulted in a 2-1 loss to Kent State in 2016.
A win would advance Ball State to Friday's semifinal round against top-seeded Miami at 11:30 p.m.
