Field Hockey Ends Season With MAC Tourney Loss To Ohio
November 01, 2018 | Field Hockey
OXFORD, Ohio - The fourth-seeded Ball State field hockey team (2-16) suffered a 4-0 loss to fifth-seeded Ohio University (5-11) Thursday morning in the quarterfinals of the Mid-American Conference Tournament, on the campus of Miami University.
Â
This was the first time since the 2016 season that the Cardinals appeared in the MAC Tournament. Â Ball State also placed three on All-MAC squads, Anya Eicher, Rachel Pereira and Audrey Tabor, for the first time since 2007.
Â
The Bobcats set the tempo early, after Jillian Shive scored her 10th goal of the season off of a shot in the middle circle at the 8:56 mark. Â Ball State tried to score soon after off of a try from Pereira, but the shot attempt was saved.
Â
Ohio would find the back of the net three more times before intermission to take a 4-0 lead over the Cardinals at halftime.
Â
Ball State's goalie Grace Chavez notched three saves in the opening minutes of the second frame. Â Ohio's defense didn't allow the Cardinals a shot attempt after halftime until the 14:00 minute mark, an attempt from Pereira off of a penalty corner from Michelle Shampton.
Â
The Cardinals' defense held the Bobcats scoreless in the final 35 minutes of regulation, but Ohio's aggressive scoring before the half had set the tone for the game.  Ball State struggled offensively, only getting three shots off to Ohio's 15.  Defensively, Chavez registered eight saves.
