Shampton’s Goal Not Enough As Field Hockey Falls To No. 9 Louisville
October 03, 2018 | Field Hockey
MUNCIE, Ind. - Redshirt junior Michelle Shampton scored late in the second half for the Cardinals in today's 5-1 loss to No. 9 Louisville Wednesday afternoon at the Briner Sports Complex.
Today's game marked the second-straight contest that the Cardinals had faced a top 10 nationally ranked opponent. Ball State played at No. 1 North Carolina on Sunday afternoon, which resulted in a 9-0 loss for the Cardinals.
Today's score does not reflect on the Cardinals defensive efforts against Louisville. Ball State (1-10) held off Louisville (9-3) from scoring until the 5:39 mark, which came off of a corner. UofL would score once more in the first half with 17:59 remaining to take a 2-0 lead over Ball State at the half.
After intermission, Louisville's Bethany Russ found the back of the net quickly to increase UofL's lead to 3-0. Taylor Stone followed suite about ten minutes later to give Louisville a 4-0 edge over Ball State. With just a little over 10 minutes remaining, Shampton scored BSU's lone goal. It was Shampton's third goal of the season and sixth of her career.
Defensively, sophomore goalkeeper Grace Chavez continues to make strides as she registered six saves on the day. Chavez now has 83 saves for the season and 157 for her career.
The Ball State field hockey team returns to Mid-American Conference action when it hosts Ohio University on ESPN3 Friday at the Briner Sports Complex. The game is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
