Men’s Volleyball Squeaks Past Sacred Heart

MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State men's volleyball team hosted Sacred Heart in a nail-biting contest Friday night. The Cardinals were able to take down the Pioneers, 3-2.
Ball State tallied 52 total kills, 50 digs, 16 total blocks and six service aces. Three Cardinals marked double digit kills in the contest. Matt Szews totaled a match-high 17 kills while Matt Walsh knocked down 15 and Ben Chinnici had 10. Mitch Weiler was able to add six kills and nine digs while Parker Swartz had three kills, three digs and a block. Defensively, Nick LaVanchy led the team in digs with 10 while Walsh led the way with his six blocks.
The opening set was all Ball State. The Cardinals struck first on a Szews' kill. With two lead changes and three tied scores, Ball State was able to go on two different six point runs. The Cardinals were able to knock down 11 kills for a .304 hitting percentage. Ball State took the set 25-13 on a Chinnici kill.
Set two also went to the Cards, 25-16. Ball State had nine blocks in the set, including the set winning block assist by Walsh and Chinnici.
The third and fourth sets proved to be a challenge for Ball State. The Pioneers scored the first three points in the third set. The Cardinals had 12 kills, but only hit for .097 in set three. Sacred Heart forced extra sets after winning 27-25 in the third set on a Ball State attack error. Set four saw nine tied scores and two lead changes before Sacred Heart took the set, 25-21. In set four, Szews marked six kills and Walsh tallied five kills along with four team blocks.
Ball State was able to take the closing set, 15-7, thanks to a Pioneer attack error. Walsh had three kills while Weiler and Szews each had one.
The 15th ranked Cardinals (3-1) will take on Harvard tomorrow in Worthen at 7:30 p.m.
