MUNCIE, Ind. – The 15th ranked Ball State men's volleyball team will round out its six match home streak Friday and Saturday against two East Coast opponents. The Cardinals will host Sacred Heart Friday, Jan. 19 at 7:30 p.m. Harvard will come into Worthen Saturday, Jan. 20 to take on Ball State at 7:30 p.m.
Scouting Sacred Heart:
It will be Sacred Heart's first match of the season when they travel to Ball State. After competing in Muncie, the Pioneers will travel to take on another MIVA member in Fort Wayne.
Ball State leads the all-time series 9-0 against Sacred Heart. The last time the two teams met was in January 2017 where the Cardinals won, 3-0 (25-18, 25-22, 25-22). Mitch Weiler led the way in that match with 12 kills, five digs and three blocks. Matt Walsh recorded nine kills and four blocks while Matt Szews added five digs and two service aces.
Scouting Harvard:
Harvard will be taking on the Cardinals in just their second match of the 2018 season. The Crimson will take on Fort Wayne prior to coming to Muncie.
Ball State is 3-1 all-time against Harvard. The two teams met in Massachusetts last season with the Cardinals winning, 3-2 (25-20, 23-25, 25-17, 20-25, 15-13). Weiler and Szews each knocked down 14 kills in last year's match. Weiler also added 10 digs, two assists and two blocks while Szews had two service aces. Walsh led the way in blocks with five with Adam Wessel leading the team with 13 digs.
Cardinal Facts:
Three Cardinals are currently ranked within the MIVA. Freshman Ben Chinnici, who won the season's first MIVA Offensive Player of the Week honor, is fifth in kills per set with 3.55. Szews is third in the league in blocks per set with 1.20. Weiler is fifth in the conference in both digs per set (2.33) and total digs (28).
As a team, Ball State is fifth in the nation with 2.05 blocks per set.
In the record books:
Walsh tallied 12 kills, four block assists and one solo block in the seven sets of play last weekend. Walsh's name can be found all over the Ball State record books, including six top ten spots. He sits in the second place spot in career block assists (during rally scoring era) with 350. He has totaled 386 career blocks, which places him third in Ball State history (during rally scoring era). Walsh is sixth in school history in two categories, career attack percentage (.399) and career blocks per set (1.23). He has tallied 66 career services aces, placing him fifth in the record books. He also sits in the ninth spot in career solo blocks (36). Outside of the top ten, Walsh is 12th in career aces per set with .21, 12th in career points with 843 and 18th in career kills with 566.
Szews led the team with 22 total kills last weekend for 3.14 kills per set. He also tallied 12 digs and six block assists. Szews has also etched his name into the record books. Szews is currently atop the list in career service aces per set with .34. He is third in career kills per set with 3.38 and third in career points per set with 4.09. Szews has also tallied 1.58 career digs per set, placing him in the 16th spot.
Weiler had 14 kills, 2.00 kills per set, and a .367 hitting percentage against BYU and Stanford. After two matches of play this season, Weiler is 15th in school history (during rally scoring era) in career digs with 371.
Scharenborg and Wessel are also in the record books. Scharenborg currently has 147 career assists, which places him in 10th place. Wessel has 2.08 career digs per set, placing him fourth in Ball State history. He is also 19th in both career digs (337) and career assists (81).
