Men’s Volleyball Takes Down Harvard in Four Sets

MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State men's volleyball team was tested again Saturday night in a tough 3-1 win over Harvard.
Three Ball State Cardinals hit for double digit kills for the second match in a row. Matt Szews led the way with 13 while Matt Walsh added 12 and Ben Chinnici added 10. Courtland Scharenborg and Jake Romano shared the setter role tonight with Scharenborg posting 20 assists and Romano adding 19. Defensively, Nick LaVanchy had a team high 12 digs and Walsh led the way with 10 total blocks.
Set one saw seven tied scores and five lead changes before a Walsh kill sealed the deal for the Cardinals, 25-22. Ball State tallied 11 kills, 11 digs and five blocks. Romano had two service aces in the first set and Chinnici had one.
The Crimson were able to even the score with a 25-23 set two victory. With another close set came eight tied scores and four lead changes. Walsh led the set with four kills and three block assists. Szews added three kills while Chinnici, Mitch Weiler and Romano each had two apiece.
After the 10 minute break, Ball State was able to come back out and take the third set thanks to a set high five kills from Szews. Blake Reardon was also able to add four kills. The Cardinals were able to mark 11 blocks in the set with four from Scharenborg, three from Walsh, and two from Anthony Lebryk and Reardon. Ball State was also able to record an impressive .535 hitting percentage in set number three.
The final set was all Ball State, winning 25-9. The Cardinals had 12 kills for a .476 hitting percentage along with seven total blocks. Ball State was able to hold Harvard to only three kills and a -.250 hitting percentage. Freshman Ryan Dorgan ended the match with his first career kill in a Ball State jersey.
The 15th ranked Ball State men's volleyball team will begin its six match road trip next weekend. The Cardinals will travel to Virginia to take on No. 10 Pepperdine and George Mason. Ball State will take on Pepperdine Saturday, Jan. 27 at 7 p.m. They will then battle George Mason on Sunday, Jan. 28 at 5 p.m.
