Men’s Volleyball Falls to Stanford in Disappointing Loss

MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State men's volleyball team suffered its second straight loss with a 3-0 sweep by Stanford Saturday night.
The Cardinals tallied 27 kills, led by Blake Reardon's seven. Mitch Weiler and Matt Szews added five with Matt Walsh and Ben Chinnici each knocking down three. Ball State has 26 assists, 16 of which were credited to Courtland Scharenborg. Weiler led the team with nine of Ball State's 29 digs. Nick LaVanchy and Adam Wessel each added six digs. Anthony Lebryk led the team with six block assists. The team tallied 22 total blocks.
Set one saw eight tied scores and three lead changes. The Stanford Cardinal were able to pull away, winning the first set (25-23) on an Eric Beatty kill. Ball State tallied 12 kills, six digs and 13 total blocks in the opening set. Walsh and Weiler led the team with three kills apiece.
The second set seemed to be more than Ball State could handle. The Cardinals fell 25-13. The Cardinals were held to only six kills and a negative hitting percentage. Reardon and Chinnici each tallied two kills. Wessel and Lavanchy both had four digs apiece is set two.
A closer third set was ended on a Stanford kill, securing the match with a 25-20 victory. The closing set was highlighted by three Reardon kills and five Weiler digs.
The 14th ranked Ball State Cardinals (2-2) will look to bounce back into the win column next weekend with Sacred Heart and Harvard. Sacred Heart will come to town Friday, Jan. 20 at 7:30 p.m. followed by Harvard on Saturday, Jan. 21.
