Cardinals put four golfers among top 30 individually
RICHMOND, Ky. -- The Ball State men's golf team dropped two spots on the leaderboard Sunday to finish fourth of 16 teams at the EKU Intercollegiate.
The Cardinals posted a second consecutive round of 288 to wrap up the 54-hole event with a total of 854 (+14) at the University Club at Arlington.
Tournament host Eastern Kentucky, which led by four shots entering the final day, closed with the low round of the weekend, a 275, to finish at 837 (-3). The Colonels won by 12 shots over second-place Longwood (+9). Dayton (+13) edged Ball State by one shot for third.
BSU senior Johnny Watts, who shared the overnight lead, finished third individually. He and freshman Jack Cunningham posted the Cardinals' best scores on the final day with rounds of 71 (+1).
Watts took the lead early in the final round with birdies on two of his first four holes but gave it back with bogeys on the ninth and 10th. He eventually finished three shots off the pace of Longwood's Jordan Boulton (-6), who claimed medalist honors by one stroke over EKU's Noah Combs.
Ball State placed three other golfers among the top third of the 90-man field. Michael VanDeventer closed with a round of 72 to tie for 24th at 215 (+5). Cunningham and Timothy Wiseman were one shot behind him in a tie for 30th.
The EKU Invitational marked the second of six events on the Cardinals' fall schedule. They will wrap up a busy opening stretch next week when they head to SMU's Trinity Forest Invitational in Dallas (Sept. 24-26).
