Field Hockey Hits the Road Again for Two Weekend Contests

MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State field hockey team will be on the road yet again this weekend as part of their eight game road streak. The Cardinals will travel to College Station, Pennsylvania on Friday, Sept. 15 to play Saint Francis in a neutral site game. Ball State will then take on in-state rivals Indiana on Sunday, Sept. 17 at 1 p.m.
The Red Flash will prove to be a tough test for the Cardinals as they sit at 4-2 on the season. The Red Flash wins include Mid-American Conference contender Central Michigan (4-0), Towson (2-1), Sienna (5-2) and Colgate (6-2). Saint Francis' Brea Seabrook leads her squad with six goals, four assists and 16 points so far in the 2017 season. In the cage, the Red Flash have a dominate force in junior Elizabeth Dyer. Dyer goes into Friday's matchup with over 400 minutes played this season and a .795 save percentage.
Looking toward Sunday's matchup, the Cardinals will seek revenge on the Hoosiers after falling 5-2 in a scrimmage earlier this season. The last time the two teams played a regular season contest was in 2015 where Ball State fell, 4-2. So far this season, the Hoosiers have a 4-2 overall record. Indiana's wins included Miami, Central Michigan, Villanova and 15th ranked Wake Forrest. IU's Maddie Latino and Ciara Girouard both lead the team with five goals and 10 points so far this season. Ellie Hempt leads the team in assists with three.
The Cardinals are coming off a thrilling 2-1 overtime win against Lehigh last weekend and will look to feed off that Friday and Sunday. Ball State is currently sitting in the top of the Mid-American Conference in multiple categories. The Cardinals are second in the conference in scoring average with 13 goals and also second in goals against average only allowing seven. The Ball State squad is first in assists, tallying nine so far this season.
Individually, Michelle Shampton sits at third in the MAC in points with eight. Shampton along with Abbey Main and Sierra Jefferson are tied for fourth in the conference with three goals each. Freshman goalkeeper Grace Chavez is third in the MAC with 27 total saves, including one shutout. Chavez is also second in goals against average (1.46) and second in save percentage (.794).
