Cardinals Roll to 18-3 Victory Over Western Michigan

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – For the third consecutive game, the Ball State baseball team reached double digits in the run column on the way to an 18-3 triumph over host Western Michigan Sunday afternoon.
The Cardinals (14-18, 3-6 MAC) scored 46 runs in the three-game series sweep.
Ball State quickly jumped on top of Western Michigan (13-14, 3-6) by batting around in the first inning and plating six runs. Sophomore Griffin Hulecki, junior Colin Brockhouse, senior Matt Eppers and sophomore Roman Baisa produced RBIs in the opening frame.
The game was never in doubt as the Cardinals scored in every inning except the second and seventh. Junior Seth Freed hit his second home run of the season in the third inning. He finished with three hits and scored four times. Senior Caleb Stayton chipped in with three hits as well. Meanwhile, Baisa, Brockhouse, Eppers and junior Jeff Riedel each tallied multiple RBIs.
Senior lefty Kevin Marnon held WMU to three runs in five-plus innings pitched to pick up his third win. Junior right-handed pitcher Brendan Burns tossed a season-high four innings in relief and limited the Broncos to three hits to record his second save.
As a team, Ball State hit .423 (52-of-123) in the series with six home runs and 12 doubles. Eppers batted a robust .769 (10-of-13) and scored six times during the three games.
Next up for the Cardinals is a home non-conference game against Valparaiso on Tuesday, April 11. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
