Offense Erupts in Ball State Baseball Doubleheader Sweep

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Ball State baseball team erupted for 28 runs in two games Saturday afternoon to earn a doubleheader sweep over Western Michigan. The Cardinals prevailed by scores of 16-5 and 12-9.

Ball State (13-18, 2-6 MAC) piled up season bests in runs (16) and hits (18) in game one. Sophomore Griffin Hulecki gave the Cardinals the lead for good with a bases-clearing single in the fifth inning to make the score, 6-4. Senior Sean Kennedy added a three-run home run one inning later to extend Ball State's cushion to 10-5.

Kennedy, along with fellow seniors Alex Maloney and Matt Eppers, and junior Jeff Riedel all finished with three hits.

The Cardinals took advantage of the long ball in game two, highlighted by Kennedy's fourth inning grand slam, to complete the doubleheader sweep. Maloney homered twice and Eppers tallied his first home run of the spring as well. Eppers became the first Cardinal to notch five hits in a game since teammate Caleb Stayton accomplished the feat last year against Western Michigan. Meanwhile, Maloney registered a personal-high five RBIs.

Ball State finished with 16 extra base hits in the two games – 11 doubles and five home runs. In the previous five games, the Cardinals totaled just five extra base hits.

The two teams will conclude the series Sunday afternoon, April 9. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
