Solid Pitching, Maloney’s Two RBIs Lead Ball State to 4-1 Win
March 07, 2017 | Baseball
PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – The Ball State baseball team wrapped up play at the Snowbird Baseball Classic Tuesday morning with a 4-1 victory over Boston College. The Cardinals (8-4) won four of their five Spring Break games in Florida.
Freshman John Baker made his first collegiate start on the mound and held Boston College (4-6) in check in five innings of work. The right-handed pitcher limited the Eagles to one run on just two hits. Baker struck out the side in the second inning and finished with four strikeouts.
Ball State's bullpen featuring sophomore Brendan Burns, sophomore T.J. Baker and senior BJ Butler allowed just one Boston College player to reach base the final four innings.
Maloney's solo home run in the fourth inning, his second this spring, broke a 1-1 tie and gave the Cardinals the lead for good. Senior Sean Kennedy added a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning and Maloney came up with a two-out RBI single in the seventh to stretch the cushion to 4-1.
Maloney and Kennedy led the Ball State offense with two hits apiece.
Boston College entered Tuesday's game with two wins over Mid-American Conference teams – Northern Illinois and Central Michigan. The Eagles finished one win away from advancing to the College World Series last year.
Next up for Ball State is a four-game series at No. 3 Oregon State. The series begins Thursday evening with first pitch slated for 8:35 p.m. ET.
