Around the Horn
Heading West For 2nd Straight Year: This is the second straight year the Ball State baseball team has made a long trip to the western portion of the United States. Last year, the Cardinals ventured to Arizona for opening weekend.
Series History: The two teams met for the very first time in the 2016 season opener. Oregon State held on for a 7-6 win after building a 7-3 advantage through six innings. C/1B Caleb Stayton tallied two hits and two RBIs in last year's game.
Oregon State is the only Pac-12 team Ball State has ever met on the diamond.
Milestone Ahead: Head coach Rich Maloney needs one more victory to reach 400 career wins at Ball State. This is Maloney's second stint as the Cardinals' head coach and his 12th year overall with Ball State. He is 399-241-1 (.623) at Ball State and 740-485-1 (.604) overall as a head coach.
Quality Pitching: Ball State's team ERA of 2.72 is tops in the MAC and ranks 20th nationally. The starting pitchers have produced seven quality outings in 12 games thus far.
On the other side of the field, Oregon State's team ERA of 1.36 is second best in the nation.
Getting Hot in Florida: Four of Ball State's regular starters hit better than .350 in the recent five-game set at the Snowbird Baseball Classic in Florida. C/1B Caleb Stayton led the squad at .417 (5-of-12). SS Sean Kennedy (.389), OF Roman Baisa (.368) and OF Matt Eppers (.353) were the other hot hitters.
Lots of Experience in Lineup: Between C/1B Caleb Stayton, 3B Alex Maloney, SS Sean Kennedy and OF Matt Eppers, the four seniors have combined for more than 600 starts (622) for the Cardinals.
