No. 4 Oregon State Takes Opener From Ball State, 2-0
March 09, 2017 | Baseball
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Oregon State's Bryce Fehmel held the Ball State baseball team to one hit through eight innings as the host Beavers earned a 2-0 win over the Cardinals Thursday night at Goss Stadium.
The only runs of the game were scored in the bottom of the second inning. Oregon State's Andy Atwood touched home on a wild pitch. Nick Madrigal then followed with a two-out RBI single.
Ball State's lone hit came from sophomore Trent Theisen in the second inning. He also reached base with a walk in the eighth inning.
These are two of the best pitching teams in the nation. Oregon State (11-1) entered the game ranked second nationally in ERA (1.36) while Ball State (8-5) ranked 20th (2.72). OSU's Fehmel struck out four Ball State batters and got the Cardinals to ground out 12 times over eight innings.
Ball State's pitching nearly matched that of Oregon State in the opener of the four-game series. Starter Evan Korson allowed two runs in four innings. Reliever Nick Floyd pitched the final four innings and only gave up one hit.
Due to some impending wet weather on Saturday, the two teams will now play a doubleheader on Friday beginning at 4:35 p.m. ET and conclude the series with a single game on Saturday also at 4:35 p.m. ET.
