Men’s Volleyball Stunned by McKendree in MIVA Action

LEBANON, Ill. – The No. 11 Ball State men's volleyball team fell to conference foe McKendree, 3-1, Thursday night.
Junior Matt Walsh led the Cardinals with 11 kills for a .556 hitting percentage. Walsh added three service aces and three block assists. Freshman Matt Szews added 10 kills, seven digs, two service aces and two block assists. Edgardo Cartagena and Brendan Surane each knocked down nine kills while Alex Pia had seven. Connor Gross had 42 assists and tied with Nick Lavanchy with a team high eight digs.
The opening set went to the Cardinals, 25-22. Szews had four of the team's 14 kills, including the set winning point on Gross assist. Walsh had three kills in set one while Surane, Gross and Pia knocked down two each.
The second set saw 15 tied scores and five lead changes, but the set eventually went to the Bearcats, 25-23. Cartagena had a team high five kills in set two.
In the third set, McKendree knocked down 18 kills compared to Ball State's 10 and took the set, 25-22. Walsh had three kills and two service aces.
Surane led the way in kills in the fourth set with four, but it wasn't enough to keep the match alive. The Cardinals fell in the fourth set with a final score of 25-23.
Ball State (15-7, 6-5 MIVA) will take the court again on Saturday, March 25 as they look to take down No. 2 Ohio State. The match is set to begin at 7 p.m.
