MUNCIE, Ind. – The No. 11 Ball State men's volleyball team will take on Fort Wayne, formerly known as IPFW, two times this week. The first matchup will take place on Tuesday, Feb. 8 in Muncie at 7:30 p.m. The Cardinals will then travel to Fort Wayne on Friday, Feb. 10. Match time in Fort Wayne is set for 7 p.m.
Scouting Fort Wayne:
Fort Wayne comes into the week with a 10-19 record and 1-1 in the MIVA. Pelegrin Vargas is currently fourth in the conference in kills with 147. The Mastodons are second in the MIVA with 488 assists. They are also right behind the Cardinals in total digs with 354.
Last year's meetings:
Ball State and Fort Wayne played twice last season, both victories by the Cardinals. The first match was a sweep by the Cardinals in Muncie (25-23, 25-23, 25-18). Mike Scannell had an impressive performance in that contest, knocking down a team high 10 kills, four blocks and five digs. Mitch Weiler added eight kills, six digs and one assist. Other big numbers by the Cardinals were Alex Pia with six blocks and Adam Wessel with 13 digs.
The second time the Mastodons and Cardinals battled was in Fort Wayne. The match went to Ball State, 3-1 (21-25, 25-19, 25-23, 25-19). Ball State leaders in kills were Brendan Surane with 13, Weiler with nine and Edgardo Cartagena with seven. Matt Walsh knocked down nine blocks while Surane added three. Weiler led the team with 10 digs in that contest.
Cardinal Facts:
Ball State has five different Cardinals on the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association leader board. Senior Brendan Surane is fourth in kills per set with 3.46. Freshman Nick Lavanchy is fifth with 2.17 digs per set. Freshman Matt Szews is fifth in aces per set with .38. Senior setter Connor Gross averages 10.72 assists per set, putting him second in the MIVA. Junior Matt Walsh is the lone Cardinal at the top of a leader board with 1.19 blocks per set
As a team, Ball State is first in the MIVA with 8.95 digs per set. BSU is also second in kills (528), second in kills per set (12.88), second in digs (367), second in blocks (106) and second in blocks per set (2.59).
Ball State enters this week's matches second in the country, right behind MIVA foe Ohio State, in blocks per set with 2.59. The Cardinals are also fifth in the NCAA with 28.00 team attacks per set. Individually, Connor Gross and Matt Walsh are both ranked nationally. Gross is fourth in assists per set with 10.72. Walsh is second with 1.19 blocks per set.
In the record books:
Preseason All-MIVA selection Matt Walsh's name can be found all over the Ball State volleyball career record books (during rally scoring). He is sixth in attack percentage (.403), sixth in blocks per set (1.24), ninth in block assists (266 through 234 sets), ninth in total blocks (290) and tied for 18th in solo blocks (24).
Senior Alex Pia also has stamped his name in the record books (during rally scoring). Pia is ninth in career blocks per set with 1.05 through 170 sets. He is also 16th in career block assists (173) and tied for 19th in total career blocks (178). Pia is four away from passing Brendan Surane and moving into 18th place.
Senior Brendan Surane knocked down 27 kills for an impressive .558 hitting percentage in the last two matches against No. 1 Ohio State and McKendree. He moved into 13th in school history (during rally scoring) with 622 kills. Surane is also tied for 16th (during rally scoring) in career solo blocks with 26 and 18th in total career blocks with 182. He is also 14th with a career attack percentage of .295 and 15th with 2.23 kills per set (through 279 sets).
Connor Gross took his place in the record books, sitting at eighth (during rally scoring) in career assists with 637 through 75 sets. Gross tallied 71 assists, averaging 11.83 assists per set in the matches against Ohio State and McKendree. He also added two kills and four block assists.
Junior Mitch Weiler racked up 89 kills, 25 blocks and 59 digs in the first 11 matches of action. Weiler leads the team in career digs with 270. He is also 18th in school history (during rally scoring) with 1.46 digs per set (through 185 sets).
