MUNCIE, Ind. – The No. 11 Ball State men's volleyball team is looking to continue the two match conference win streak this week as it takes on Grand Canyon University. The Cardinals and the Lopes will battle it out twice this week on Wednesday (Mar. 1) and Thursday (Mar. 2). Both matches will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Worthen Arena.
Scouting Grand Canyon:
Entering the week, Grand Canyon's Sky Engleman is ranked in the MIVA in two different categories. Engleman is third in the conference with 2.24 digs per set and third in digs with 139. Ashton King is another one of the Lopes ranked in the MIVA. King is fifth in blocks per set with 1.07.
As a team, GCU is third in the MIVA with 12.02 kills per set. The Lopes are also third in block assists (257) and in total blocks (149).
Last year's meetings:
Ball State took on Grand Canyon twice last season in Phoenix. The first contest went to the Cardinals, 3-2 (20-25, 25-18, 22-25, 25-19, 15-13). Mitch Weiler had a big night in the first meeting between the two teams last season. Weiler led the team with 15 kills and added eight digs and four block assists. Mike Scannell also put up a big performance with 11 kills, seven blocks and two service aces. Matt Walsh had a match high eight blocks. Libero Adam Wessel added a match high 16 digs along with three assists.
The Lopes took the second match, 3-2 (25-27, 20-25, 25-22, 25-19, 15-13). Mike Scannell knocked down a team high 15 kills while Mitch Weiler added 11. Matt Walsh tallied nine kills along with eight blocks. Alex Pia added eight blocks and Connor Gross added six. Adam Wessel had a match high 13 digs in the contest.
Cardinal Facts:
Going into this week's matches, the Cardinals are first in the MIVA in digs per set with 8.84. Ball State is also second in the MIVA in multiple categories: kills per set (12.63), total blocks (157), block assists (260), digs (557), assists per set (11.59) and blocks per set (2.49). Ball State is also third in total kills with 796 and third in hitting percentage at .306.
Ball State is also nationally ranked in blocks per set with 2.49. Individually, both Connor Gross and Matt Walsh are nationally ranked. Gross is fifth in assists per set (10.59) and Walsh is fourth in blocks per set (1.15).
Ball State is currently third in the nation in average attendance with 1,425. The Cardinals are behind Hawaii (3,087) and BYU (3,086).
In the record books:
Freshman Matt Szews leads the team with 219 kills and 3.59 kills per set. His 3.59 kills per set also places him third in the MIVA while his 219 kills puts him fifth. In Szews' collegiate debut, he knocked down 19 kills. That was the most in a season opener since the 2009 season when Todd Chamberlin tallied 20. Szews has also knocked down 34 total blocks so far this season, 31 block assists and three solo.
Preseason All-MIVA selection Matt Walsh put down 19 kills for an impressive .692 attack percentage in last week's action. Walsh sits at second in the MIVA with 1.15 blocks per set. Walsh's name can also be found all over the Ball State volleyball career record books (during rally scoring). He is sixth in attack percentage (.410), sixth in blocks per set (1.23), seventh in block assists (288 through 256 sets), eighth in total blocks (314), 16th in service aces (47) and tied for 17th in solo blocks (26).
Senior Alex Pia also has stamped his name in the record books (during rally scoring). Pia is 10th in career blocks per set with 1.03 through 179 sets. He is also 16th in career block assists (178) and tied for 18th in total career blocks (184).
With his 18 kills in the two matches last week, senior preseason All-MIVA selection Brendan Surane moved into 11th in school history (during rally scoring) with 677 kills. Surane is also 16th (during rally scoring) in career solo blocks with 27 along with an eighth place spot in service aces (63). He is also 14th with a career attack percentage of .286, 14th with 2.26 kills per set (through 287 sets), 17th in block assists (166) and 16th in total blocks (193).
Connor Gross took his place in the record books, sitting at seventh (during rally scoring) in career assists with 865 through 97 sets. Last week, he had 75 assists, 10.71 assists per set along with 13 digs and eight blocks. The senior setter has 646 assists so far this season. He averages 10.59 assists per set, placing him second in the conference.
Junior Mitch Weiler racked up 120 kills, 34 blocks and 88 digs so far in the 2017 season. Weiler leads the team in career digs with 299. He is also 20th in school history (during rally scoring) with 1.44 digs per set.
