February 25, 2017 | Baseball
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Ball State baseball team returned to its winning ways Saturday afternoon with a doubleheader sweep over George Mason by scores of 14-6 and 7-0. Both games were played at Pelicans Park as part of the Caravelle Resort Tournament.
After being held scoreless by defending national champion Coastal Carolina in a 1-0 loss on Friday, the Cardinals (4-2) burst out for a season-high 14 runs in game one against George Mason (2-4). Newcomer Justin Kirkpatrick got the offense going in the second inning with a two-run single. Four different Cardinals tallied an RBI in the third inning to give Ball State a 6-1 lead.
The Cardinals then put the game away with six runs in the sixth inning. Sophomore Roman Baisa's two-run double highlighted the frame.
Seven of the nine Ball State starters finished with multiple hits. Kirkpatrick went 3-for-5 with three RBIs while Baisa recorded two hits, two RBIs and three runs scored. On the mound, left-hander Kevin Marnon notched his second win thanks to going six innings and allowing three runs.
Sophomore pitcher Evan Marquardt dominated game two. The righty retired the first 12 George Mason batters before giving up a single to begin the fifth inning. Marquardt held George Mason to just two hits and struck out nine batters over seven innings. Senior David Current threw the final two innings to complete the shutout.
Senior Alex Maloney gave Ball State all the runs it would need with his first home run of the year, a two-run blast over the left field wall, in the top of the first inning. Newcomer Jeff Riedel reached base three times and scored twice.
Ball State wraps up play at the Caravelle Resort Tournament tomorrow against West Virginia. Game time is slated for 11 a.m.
