West Virginia Rallies Late to Take Down Ball State, 4-1
February 26, 2017 | Baseball
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Ball State starting pitcher Colin Brockhouse had a no-hitter into the seventh inning, but West Virginia rallied with two runs in both the eighth and ninth innings to pull out a 4-1 win Sunday afternoon at Pelicans Park.
Ball State (4-3) scored its only run in the bottom of the first inning. Newcomer Seth Freed produced a one-out triple down the right field line and proceeded to touch home on Alex Maloney's RBI groundout.
It appeared the 1-0 lead might be good enough for the Cardinals for most of the game. Brockhouse, a right-handed pitcher from Fort Wayne, Indiana, did not allow a hit to West Virginia (4-2) through the first six innings. Marques Inman finally broke up the no-hitter with a single to left field with one out in the top of the seventh. However, Brockhouse got the next two batters to fly out to keep the Mountaineers off the scoreboard.
West Virginia finally struck for two runs in the top of the eighth behind Darius Hill's two-out, two-run home run to right field. The Mountaineers capitalized on three wild pitches in the ninth inning to plate two more runs.
The loss spoiled another terrific outing by a Ball State starting pitcher. All four starters at this weekend's tournament produced a quality start (complete at least six innings and allow three runs or less). Brockhouse went eight innings, struck out a career-high nine batters, allowed three hits and two runs.
West Virginia starter Carter Camp was almost as effective as Brockhouse. He pitched five innings, struck out seven batters and gave up just one run. The Mountaineer pitching staff did not allow a hit the final six innings.
Ball State returns to action next weekend when it travels to Florida for the beginning of its spring break trip. The Cardinals will play nine games in Florida and Oregon between March 3 and March 11.
