Three Players Tally Double Digit Kills in Men’s Volleyball Victory Over Lindenwood

ST. CHARLES, Mo. – The No. 12 Ball State men's volleyball team bounces back from last weekend's losses with a 3-1 victory over Lindenwood Friday night.
Senior Brendan Surane, junior Matt Walsh and freshman Matt Szews each tallied 10 kills in the contest. Surane also had four digs and two block assists. Szews added three digs and one block assist. Walsh led the team with a .562 hitting percentage, six block assists and one solo block. Freshman Nick Lavanchy, who was playing in front of hometown friends and family, led the team with nine digs. Senior setter Connor Gross had 37 assists, seven digs and four block assists.
The Lions came out in the opening set with 19 kills for a .424 hitting percentage while the Cardinals tallied only nine kills. Szews led the way in the opening set loss (25-21) with three kills. Surane added two kills and two block assists. Senior Alex Pia knocked down one kill and two block assists.
The second set was back and forth and eventually tied at 16 before the Cardinals powered through to win the set, 25-18. Ball State had 14 kills for a .385 hitting percentage along with a solo block from Pia. Surane and Szews both had four kills while Walsh, Pia and Blake Reardon each had two.
Surane and Mitch Weiler each had three kills in the set three victory, 25-21. Walsh added two kills, three block assists and one solo block. Gross had one kill, which was the set winning kill on a Lavanchy assist. Lavanchy also had three of the team's nine digs in the third set.
The fourth set had 11 tied scores and eight lead changes, but the Cardinals were able to seal the match victory with a 27-25 final score. Walsh knocked down all four of his attempted kills and scored two of the last three points for Ball State. The Cardinals finished the final set with 13 kills and four block assists.
The Ball State men's volleyball team moves to 12-4 overall and 4-3 in the MIVA. The Cardinals will continue conference action tomorrow (Feb. 25) as they travel to Quincy. First serve is set for 8 p.m. ET.
