Strong Play from Matt Szews Helps Push Cardinals Over Quincy

QUINCY, Ill. – The No. 12 Ball State men's volleyball team continued conference play at Quincy Saturday night and swept the Hawks, 3-0 (25-18, 25-14, 25-17).
Ball State knocked down 45 total kills for a .506 hitting percentage. The Cardinals also had 10 block assists and three solo blocks on the night.
Freshman Matt Szews put up a powerful performance leading the Cardinals with 16 kills for a .577 hitting percentage. Szews added a team high four service aces and four digs. Matt Walsh also had a big night with nine kills, three block assists and one solo block. Brendan Surane added eight kills, three digs and one service ace. Connor Gross tallied 38 assists on the night. Defensively, Nick Lavanchy led the team with seven digs.
In the set one Cardinal victory (25-18), Szews knocked down six of the team's 16 kills including the set winning point. Walsh converted on all four of his attempted kills in the opening set. Anthony Lebryk, Surane and Mitch Weiler each tallied two kills.
Ball State was able to knock down 15 kills for a .682 hitting percentage in the set two victory. The Cardinals scored the last four points of the set to secure the 25-14 victory, including a kill by Weiler and a kill and two service aces by Szews.
Set three had seven tied scores and two lead changes including an 8-2 run by the Cardinals to close the set, 25-17. Szews had five kills while Walsh had four. As a team, Ball State had 14 kills, .462 hitting percentage, two service aces, eight digs and five total blocks.
The Ball State men's volleyball team (13-4, 5-3 MIVA) will return home next week for a double dose of Grand Canyon University. The matches will be on Wednesday, Mar. 1 and Thursday, Mar. 2 and will both begin at 7:30 p.m.
