MUNCIE, Ind. – The No. 11 Ball State men's volleyball team will continue conference play as they travel to take on Lewis and Loyola-Chicago. The Cardinals will look to take down No. 7 Lewis on Friday, Feb. 17 at 7 p.m. The Ball State squad will then head to Loyola to battle the No. 10 Ramblers at 7 p.m.
Scouting Lewis:
The Flyers (9-3, 4-2) are fourth nationally in hitting percentage with .329. Outside hitter, Mitch Perinar is third in the MIVA in kills per set (3.69), second in the MIVA in kills (181) and fourth in the MIVA in hitting percentage (.347). Outside hitter Michael Simmons has tallied 108 digs, placing him third in the conference. Jacob Schmiegelt is another Flyer ranked in the top of the MIVA with 1.06 blocks per set. Matt Yoshimoto has marked 10.08 assists per set, placing him fourth in the MIVA.
Scouting Loyola-Chicago:
The No. 10 Ramblers enter this week's matchup with a 7-4 overall record and 3-1 in the MIVA. Loyola's Jeff Jendryk is second in hitting percentage with .481. Jendryk is also fourth in the conference with 1.02 blocks per set. Paul Narup is also ranked in the category in the MIVA with 1.02 blocks per set.
Last year's meetings:
Ball State took on Lewis twice last year, splitting the matches. The first meeting in Muncie went to the Cardinals, 3-2 (25-23, 25-22, 17-25, 16-25, 15-12). Mike Scannell led the team with 14 kills in front of the crowd in Worthen. Brendan Surane tallied 13 kills, four service aces and nine digs. Mitch Weiler added 12 kills, seven blocks and 10 digs. Alex Pia knocked down seven blocks while Matt Walsh added six. Adam Wessel led the team with 12 digs.
Lewis swept the Cardinals in the second meeting (25-22, 25-19, 25-13). Surane led the way with 10 kills, four blocks and one service ace. Edgardo Cartagena tallied four kills and added five digs.
The first time Ball State met the Ramblers last season was when Loyola came to Worthen Arena in February. The Cardinals took the match, 3-1 (26-24, 25-23, 20-25, 25-23). Scannell had a team high 11 kills along with one service ace and two assists. Surane and Weiler both knocked down seven kills. Walsh and Pia both tallied four blocks while Wessel led the way defensively with 18 digs.
The two teams met again in April, this time the match went to Loyola, 3-1 (25-23, 27-25, 27-29, 25-17). Scannell an Weiler both led the team in kills with 12. Walsh knocked down five blocks while Weiler had two. Wessel had a team high 12 digs and Weiler tallied eight.

Entering this week, Ball State in third nationally in blocks per set with 2.56. Individually, Walsh is ranked third nationally with 1.20 blocks per set.
Going into this week's matches, the Cardinals are first in two different categories in the MIVA, total blocks (126) and block assists (211). Ball State is also second in kills (623), second in kills per set (12.71), second in assists per set (11.71), second in digs (424), second in digs per set (8.65) and second in blocks per (2.56).
Freshman Matt Szews leads the team with 167 kills and 3.55 kills per set. Szews is fourth in the MIVA with 3.55 kills per set. He is also fifth in kills with 167. In Szews' collegiate debut, he knocked down 19 kills. That was the most in a season opener since the 2009 season when Todd Chamberlin tallied 20. Szews has also tallied 19 total blocks on the season.
Sophomore Adam Wessel, a defensive specialist for the Cardinals, had 12 digs and 1.50 digs per set in the two matches last week. Wessel is currently second in the MIVA with 2.31 digs per set.
In the record books:
Preseason All-MIVA selection Matt Walsh put down 15 kills for a .345 attack percentage in last week's action. Walsh also knocked down 10 blocks and tallied 1.25 blocks per set. Walsh's name can be found all over the Ball State volleyball career record books (during rally scoring). He is sixth in attack percentage (.401), sixth in blocks per set (1.24), seventh in block assists (276 through 242 sets), eighth in total blocks (300) and tied for 18th in solo blocks (24). Walsh is also on top in the MIVA in blocks per set with 1.20.
Senior Alex Pia also has stamped his name in the record books (during rally scoring). Pia is 10th in career blocks per set with 1.04 through 171 sets. He is also 16th in career block assists (173) and tied for 19th in total career blocks (178).
With his 16 kills in the two matches last week, senior preseason All-MIVA selection Brendan Surane moved into 13th in school history (during rally scoring) with 638 kills. Surane is also tied for 16th (during rally scoring) in career solo blocks with 26. He is also 14th with a career attack percentage of .291 and 15th with 2.20 kills per set (through 287 sets).
Connor Gross took his place in the record books, sitting at eighth (during rally scoring) in career assists with 717 through 83 sets. Last week, he had 80 assists, 12 digs and four kills. The senior setter has 498 assists so far this season. He averages 10.60 assists per set, placing him second in the conference.
Junior Mitch Weiler racked up 103 kills, 28 blocks and 68 digs so far into the 2017 season. Weiler leads the team in career digs with 279. He is also 19th in school history (during rally scoring) with 1.45 digs per set (through 193 sets).
