WBB Extends Win Streak To Eight; Defeats SEMO 69-56
December 07, 2017 | Women's Basketball
MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State women's basketball team kept its undefeated stretch going, improving to 8-0 on the season after its 69-56 victory over Southeast Missouri State (4-6) Thursday night in Worthen Arena.
Ball State relied on its offense in the paint along with winning the points off turnover battle with conviction.
For the 62nd time in her career, senior forward Moriah Monaco scored in double figures leading the team after a 17-point performance. Junior guard Jasmin Samz scored 13 points while teammates senior forward Destiny Washington finished the night with 12 and freshman forward Oshlynn Brown had 10. Senior guard Frannie Frazier led all players with a career best 11 rebounds.
Both teams struggled to get things going offensively at the start of the game, with Ball State's defense holding the RedHawks scoreless up until the 2:23 mark. The Cardinals would put together a few scoring spurts to go up by nine (11-2) with just under two minutes left in the first quarter. Southeast Missouri State fired back with an 8-5 run to make it a 15-10 ball game heading into the second frame.
The Cardinals came out with a hot hand in the second quarter, outscoring the RedHawks 13-2 to give Ball State a comfortable 16-point (28-12) advantage at the 4:59 mark. Ball State continued to build on its lead eventually taking a 39-19 cushion over SEMO at intermission. The Cardinals shot a staggering 69 percent from the floor after going 9-of-13 from the field in the second stanza and held the RedHawks to only 28 percent for the first half.
At the media timeout in the third quarter, Ball State stretched its lead to 25 (49-24). Washington scored six points during that time frame and Samz added five. Ball State's offensive explosion proved to be too much for SEMO, as the Cardinals continued their take over up until the fourth quarter. SEMO made a late run to come within 11 (65-54) with 2:35 left in the game. Both Grande and Frazier went 2-of-2 from the charity stripe to keep Ball State's advantage in double figures.
The Ball State women's basketball team will return to Worthen Arena for the remainder of non-conference action. The Cardinals will host Oakland City (Dec. 10/2p.m.), Austin Peay (Dec. 18/11 a.m.) and Western Kentucky (Dec. 21/7 p.m.).
