Women's Basketball Wins 10th Straight After Defeating Austin Peay, 89-57

MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State women's basketball rolled past Austin Peay for an 89-57 win Monday afternoon in Worthen Arena. The Cardinals remain undefeated with a 10-0 record and the Governors dropped to 7-4 on the season.
Today's contest was also a Kids Day event in which the Cardinals invited local schools to the game and focused on anti-bullying, a subject on which the women's basketball team has been educating local schools since the beginning of the fall semester. More than 3,000 fans witnessed the Ball State victory.
Four Cardinals finished the game in double figures, led by senior forward Destiny Washington, who tied her career high with 25 points and also pulled down 10 rebounds. Junior guard Jasmin Samz was the second leading scorer and had a personal- best 18 points. Junior guard Carmen Grande had a double-double with 15 points and 13 assists, and senior forward Moriah Monaco rounded out the double-digit scoring after ending the day with 10 points.
Ball State scored 27 points off of Austin Peay's 27 miscues. The Cardinals continued to find success in the paint as they have all season, outscoring the Governors 50-to-24. Ball State also had another strong rebounding performance, pulling down 43 boards to Austin Peay's 32.
Ball State jumped out to an early 16-5 lead halfway through the first quarter, but Austin Peay answered with a 7-2 run to come within six (18-12) at the 1:03 mark. Washington hit a layup to end the quarter giving the Cardinals a 20-12 lead heading into the second frame.
The Cardinals found their rhythm in the second stanza, shooting 56 percent from the field. Samz hit three straight layups off assists from Grande to put Ball State up by 18 (38-20) with 3:01 left on the clock. Samz and Washington combined for over half of the Cardinals' scoring in the first half. The two scored 29 of the Cardinals' 44 points. Washington led all players with 15 points and eight rebounds, while Samz headed into intermission with 14 points.
The Cardinals built upon their lead in the third quarter, taking a commanding 42-point advantage into the final period. Ball State outscored the Governors 29-11 in the third frame.
Ball State's lead was unconquerable for the Governors in the final frame, as the Cardinals cruised to their 10th straight win.
The Ball State women's basketball team will conclude its non-conference season when it hosts Western Kentucky Thursday night at 7 p.m. in Worthen Arena.
